Locust Grove hosting Jane Austen Society meeting Sunday

-A A +A

Greater Louisville Jane Austen Society
The Sunday meeting of the Greater Louisville Region of the Jane Austen Society will take place at Locust Grove, 561 Blankenbaker Lane at 2 p.m. The meetings are open to anyone interested in Jane Austen. Following the program, afternoon tea will be served.
JASNA member and theatre director, Kathi E.B. Ellis, will discuss “Jane Austen and Theatre” at the meeting. Jane’s attitude towards theatre has been much debated over the years and, recently, two books on the subject have made the case that Jane was much more knowledgeable about and interested in theatre productions and performers than has previously been thought.
Ellis’ presentation will include an overview of theatre practices at the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth centuries, the plays and actors whom Jane might have seen, and the Austen family’s interest in plays both as reading material and for family theatricals. Ellis’ interest in this period of theatre history is related to her work about English actress Fanny Kemble and Kentucky-based actress Frances Drake.
Ellis is a theatre director who has worked at theatres across the country and throughout Kentucky. Her work has been recognized with nominations for the South Florida Regional Theatre Carbonell Awards. Locally she has worked with Kentucky Repertory Theatre (Horse Cave), Balagula Theatre, Actors Theatre of Louisville, is a company member of Looking for Lilith Theatre and founded ShoeString Productions, an informal collective of theatre artists.
Locust Grove is located at 561 Blankenbaker Lane (between Brownsboro Road & River Road). For more information about Locust Grove, visit www.locustgrove.org, or about Jane Austen Society, www.jasnalouisville.com.
