DETROIT NATIVE EDMUND BANKA (FAR LEFT) WAS PHOTOGRAPHED with friends outside the Reproduction Department of the Armored School, which was responsible for printing pamphlets, bulletins, and training aids during World War II. Banka entered the Army in September 1942 and was stationed at Fort Knox until he was honorably discharged in August 1945. After the war he returned to Detroit. In the early 1950s he joined the International Typographical Union, where he was able to use the printing and photography skills he practiced at Fort Knox. He died in 1977 and left an archive of historic photographs and collaborations from his days on post.
