The Speed Art Museum
The Speed Art Museum presents Brown-Forman Art After Dark: redgreenblue tomorrow from 7 until 11 p.m. (family-friendly fun until 9 p.m.) Art After Dark is an evening of museum-wide art, music and performance that invites visitors of all ages to experience the Speed like never before.
The evening’s lineup includes Rush and Roulette, a live, rapid execution of the second dimension by five artists: Jacob Heustis, Russel Hulsey, Monica Mahoney, Daniel Pfalzgraf and Letitia Quesenberry.
The multi-instrumental, multi-talented group Sapat will perform three unique sets among the Speed’s collection of medieval tapestries. A looming presence in the Louisville underground for 10 years, it is not unlikely for 15 musicians to take the stage during one of the handful of Sapat performances each year. The group has shared stages with everyone from Cat Power, Will Oldham and Michael Hurley to the Sun City Girls, Mike Rep and Blues Control.
Also included will be 3D Fun House, using light as a source for the third dimension, from the mind of Ryan Daly. It’s a light installation in the Speed’s English Renaissance Room that will explore the nature of perception—3D glasses provided.
The Louisville Improvisors present The Buddy Gilm Show with special musical guest Squeeze-bot, hailed as “one of Louisville’s more important bands that you need to see” (Backseat Sandbar, 2009). Commonly recognized as the best accordion/banjo/drums/tuba combination in Louisville, Squeeze-bot will perform your favorite tunes like you’ve never heard them played before. The Buddy Gilm Show is the Louisville Improvisors spoof of old time radio, music and comedy variety shows of the past and an exercise in nostalgia.
Family-friendly offerings include black-light face painting, hands-on art projects, star gazing by the Louisville Astronomical Society—weather permitting—a scavenger hunt of color in the collection and more. Art Sparks interactive family gallery will also be open.
Marking the sixth installment of the Speed’s Art After Dark series, redgreenblue celebrates color, a continuing theme in the museum’s galleries with the major Impressionist exhibition “Renoir to Chagall: Paris and the Allure of Color” and the contemporary installation “Howard Hodgkin: Prints and Process.” Renoir to Chagall is included with Art After Dark admission.
Also available will be tastings of specialty Brown-Forman cocktails, a cash bar and complimentary food tastings from Liquor Barn.
Admission to Art After Dark is $5 for museum members including University of Louisville, Bellarmine University and Kentucky School of Art students, faculty and staff, $15 for non-members. Patron Circle and Connoisseur members get in free. Purchase a museum membership at the door that night and get in free, along
with a free giveaway while supplies last.
Pre-paid parking is available in the Speed garage at $3 for members and $4 for non-members. Overflow parking will also be available.
Museum hours are Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. (open late); Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Galleries are closed on Monday and Tuesday.
General admission to the museum is $10 and free for members.
